International prize winning artist, ambassador for Michael Harding oil paints & Rosemary and Co. brushes, and champion of en plein air painting.
WA artist Leon Holmes has been painting and instructing full time for almost 15 years, refining his technique in Europe and developing a deep love of painting from life. As Leon himself says, it's about 'exploring the planet, a small box of paints, few brushes & a rag, making marks with colour, seeing the beauty on offer... simply gratitude for life'.
The vitality of his oil landscapes can be attributed to this en plein air technique - the need to capture a scene before the natural light changes resulting in fast brushwork picking up the most dramatic elements of his surrounding scene.
In 2017 Leon's plein air painting skill was recognised internationally, winning Best in Show at the Maui Plein Air Invitational (Hawaii) and winner of both the Quick Draw and Bronze awards at Art in the Open (Ireland) 2017. He has won awards in Australia, Holland, Florida, Ireland, Hawaii including being a Black Swan finalist twice. He is regularly invited to display work and teach at high profile art events in the US, Holland, UK, Greece and Poland. Most recently he has had a work acquired by Holland's historic Katwijk Museum.
His Juniper Galleries solo exhibition playfully titled AN UDDER EXHIBITION reveals Leon's love of the cows that have strolled through his field of vision whilst painting outdoors over the last 5 years. Each field work exhibited was painted directly from life, giving the animals real personality. From early European scenes to rural Australia and in recent months large studio based works, the exhibition provides a rare snapshot of the gentle beauty of cattle in a myriad of settings.
A preview of works available for purchase in the exhibition can be seen on Leon's below.
Show open 11 May - 2 June, meet the artist at our official opening 2pm Sunday 19 May.
